Zoo Burst

Zooburst is a brand new 3D Pop Up Book Website. Wow!

Here are some of the facts that are written on the ZooBurst Website. I hope they don’t mind :)

ZooBurst books are completely web based – all you need to get started is a standard web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.) and the Adobe Flash plugin. You can search for books by using the ‘search’ box that appears on the top-right side of every ZooBurst page.

There is even an augmented reality part to the books. Read what they say about that.

How can I view a ZooBurst Book in Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality mode allows you to view a book through your computer’s webcam. Using a special symbol, ZooBurst can determine where you would like your book to appear within your local environment and display it accordingly. To get started, open a book and click on the ‘Webcam Mode’ button. When prompted click the ‘Allow’ button to let ZooBurst access your webcam. Next, click on the black and white symbol displayed on the left side of the screen and print it on a standard sheet of paper (or click here to access the ZooBurst augmented reality marker). Hold the symbol up to your webcam and – presto! – your book appears in the palm of your hand!

This is something that I have not been able to try as I do not have a webcam.

Can I build my own ZooBurst Book?

Yes! ZooBurst is currently accepting new users on a rolling basis. To sign up for an account please visit this form and tell us a little more about yourself and why you would like to give ZooBurst a try.

I love the part that you can embed the stories onto you own website as well.

Another aspect that I love is that there will be a class management system set up for teachers and students.

I’m a teacher and would like to have my students create their own ZooBurst books. How can I do this?

In the very near future we will be releasing a “class management” feature inside ZooBurst that will allow teachers to set up classes, create assignments and set up usernames & passwords for your students. In the interim you can always log into ZooBurst on behalf of your students. ZooBurst will allow you to access your account from multiple computers at the same time, so if you are in a computer lab simply log into the site for each student and have them create their own books.

I am anxiously awaiting my email to say that I can take part in this extraordinary adventure.

Yeah, I received my email and this is something quick that I created.

LOVE IT                LOVE IT                   LOVE IT

Please read Craig’s comment re augmented reality.

I made another one. I love this site.

I made one too. I think it looks great. But I haven’t been able to get the augmented reality part to work yet, despite help from Craig. Have you?

I don’t have a webcam so can’t try. Hope that it does work though as it would be wonderful experience for the children.

Thanks for the writeup on ZooBurst! Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with Augmented Reality mode. Here’s a quick demo video of what should happen when you hold up the symbol:

It’s pretty lighting dependent – if the room is too light or too dark it can throw things off. Also, the printer that you use to print the symbol should be fairly high contrast (i.e. change your black ink cartridge before printing! ;) )

Thanks again! If you have any questions just let me know.

The webcam worked fine, I did have plenty of lighting from the computer side of the webcam. If the light is behind you, it can cause a shadow and it won’t pick up the print out.
Shame it is blocked by the nsw det. Hundreds of thousands of children would love this.
Can’t wait to show my class.

I have been playing with ZooBurst for the past week too, it is so cool! I can’t wait until it is out of Beta and I can use it with my students. I got the AR to work, very neat, the kids are going to love it!
